Session 1

How to Think Like a Financial Planner - The Sequel

In 2015, Juan Ros coined the phrase "think like a financial planner" in a presentation to what was then the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning of Greater Los Angeles (SoCalCGP today). Now, ten years later, Juan revisits the concepts from that presentation with updates from the worlds of financial planning and gift planning and where those two disciplines intersect. In this "sequel" to the original, you will discover the many similarities between the gift planning and financial planning professions and - more importantly - how gift planners can learn to think more holistically about a donor's financial situation in order to recommend and implement the gift plan that meets the donor's philanthropic, financial, and personal goals.

Juan Ros, CFP®, CSPG, AEP®, CEPA® is a partner and financial advisor with Forum Financial Management, LLP, an independent financial planning and investment management firm with offices nationwide and over $8 billion in assets under management. Prior to launching his financial advisory practice, Juan held various senior fundraising positions at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, Occidental College, and the ALS Association, helping to raise millions of dollars in current and deferred gifts. Juan works closely with legacy-minded families and business owners to enhance, protect and help transfer their wealth, particularly when charitable planning is involved. Juan serves on the board of the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils. He is an active member of the Financial Planning Association, the Central Arizona Estate Planning Council, the Exit Planning Institute, and the Arizona Charitable Gift Planners. He is past president of the Conejo Valley Estate Planning Council and what is now the Southern California Council of Charitable Gift Planners. Juan is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional. He holds the Certified Specialist in Planned Giving designation, the Accredited Estate Planner® designation, the Certified Exit Planning Advisor® designation, and the Certified Value Growth Advisor® designation. Juan earned his MBA with an emphasis in Financial Planning from California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, California. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from The Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pennsylvania. A father of two, Juan resides in Scottsdale, Arizona, with his wife Stacy and dog Sasha and commutes between offices in Scottsdale and Thousand Oaks.

Session 2

Mega Donors: Legal Challenges in Planning for Multi-Million Dollar Charitable Gifts

Bridget Devoy and Katie Gose from McDermott Will & Emery LLP will discuss charitable gift planning from the perspective of the “mega donor.” Understanding the constraints within which a potential donor is operating is key when planning for a major gift. Drawing on their extensive experience in advising both nonprofits and philanthropically motivated, ultra-high net worth families, Bridget and Katie will walk the audience through the various complexities potential donors must balance with their charitable goals, and how philanthropic professionals can best position their organization to secure such gifts.

Kathryn Gose and Bridget Devoy, Partners, McDermott Will & Emery

Katie Gose's practice focuses on estate, tax and charitable planning for high-net-worth families and individuals. She has extensive professional experience with the tax and governance complexities that arise from multi-generational wealth, with a particular focus on GST and fiduciary income tax planning. Katie enjoys being able to deliver both sophisticated tax strategies and practical solutions for families. Outside of work, she enjoys traveling and chasing after her rambunctious kids.

Bridget K. Devoy represents private foundations, public charities, museums, hospitals, social welfare organizations, and other tax-exempt organizations in a wide variety of legal matters. She provides advice on governance, grantmaking, contractual and regulatory issues, tax compliance, and legal ethics. Bridget often serves as outside general counsel to her clients and particularly enjoys acting as a strategic advisor to innovative nonprofits in both the start-up and growth phases.

Bridget also advises philanthropists, family offices, and businesses on charitable giving, tax and estate planning, estate administration, and arts and entertainment-related matters. She excels at helping clients resolve “intractable” conflicts and is particularly skilled at mediating and settling emotionally fraught and complicated disputes. Bridget represents clients in front of both federal and state regulators and helps client victims investigate and address potential instances of ethical violations, self-dealing, undue influence, and fraud by former fiduciaries.

Prior to McDermott, Bridget worked in private practice and later served as general counsel at a national children's charity and assistant general counsel at a major entertainment studio. Such experiences have given her keen insight into the challenges and needs of clients' charitable organizations and businesses. Bridget is active in her local community and is particularly passionate about helping organizations focused on foster youth, the arts, wildlife conservation, and companion and farm animals.
